RB in ESPN's Top 50
Ranked #18 in the nation by ESPN...I still like Franklin. (Click to enlarge)
Preseason 3A Elite Eight
1. Franklin (24-3) - Siva and company atop this years preseason rankings. Despite some major injury issues, expect this team to have a huge year.
2. Bellevue (19-7) - Team is loaded and looking to rebound for surprising finish last year that saw them miss the 3A state tournament.
3. Rainier Beach (29-1) - Aaron Dotson (LSU) and Devon Pickett (Eastern Washingon) lead the way for the Vikings. For once, not favored to win the Metro...how will they respond?
4. Renton (24-4) - A transfer here or there and some solid returnees have Renton back in the Elite Eight once again.
5. O'Dea (16-7) - Not flashy, but this team will win games this year.
6. Lakes (23-3) - Lose a lot, but return some serious athletes. Move to SPSL 3A is a good one, and expect the Lancers to win the league.
7. Meadowdale (23-6) - Lose 4 starters, but the program is good and the Mavs had a very good summer.
8. Mt. Rainier (23-6) - Shooters and slashers galore, up-tempo and high octane style is fun to watch.
ON THE CUSP: Lynnwood, Enumclaw, Peninsula, North Kitsap, Bainbridge.
Local College Hoops

Isaiah Thomas (Curtis) scored 27 points in his
college debut last night, Jon Brockman added 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Dawgs in their win over Western Washington. Michael Duty (O'Dea) scored 17 and Morris Anderson (Federal Way) scored 15 for the Vikings....Seattle Pacific went on the road and
played at California and lost 91-70. Chris Banchero (O'Dea) led SPU with 13.
Preseason 4A Elite Eight
(Puget Sound Area Teams)
1. Federal Way Eagles (21-7 last year) – Finished 2nd in the state last year, return some of the most talented players in the area AND were fortunate enough to have Michael Hale float across town. Jeffrey Forbes, Cole Dickerson, Isiah Umipig, Andre Barrington, Robert Christopher and many more. This team is loaded, and their only obstacle at until the playoffs is themselves.
2. Garfield Bulldogs (17-9) – Tony Wroten and De’Andre Taylor form a big, athletic and skilled backcourt, which is really the engine that makes this Bulldog team go. This group got a taste of state last year…expect a little more than a bit this season. Jaron Cox, Glenn Brooks and Wilson Platt are all experienced and can play.
3. Central Kitsap (15-10) – I hesitate putting this team this high, but their talent is impressive. 6’8” senior forward Brandon Durham averaged a little under 15ppg last season, and guards Cody Thurmond (12ppg) and Isaiah Thompson (7ppg) are both very good high school players. Throw in some added beef with Wyverne Hemphill and you have team that could win the Narrows League. Again, I’m hesitating…but this is where they start.
4. Decatur (22-8) – With Marcus Tibbs back in the fold, Decatur is once again a player for an SPSL South and perhaps even a WCD title…and maybe more. Oh, if only they still had Michael Hale. They don’t, but they do have sophomore Jerron Smith, who may be more talented than all of them. Smith averaged a little under 10ppg last season. Terrell Williams and Jordan McCloud will see their roles significantly increase this season.
5. Bellarmine Prep (25-4) – It will be the Abdul Gaddy show for the Lions. Gaddy averaged a little under 25 per contest last year, and it could be as high as 30ppg this season. When was the last time a 4A player averaged 30ppg? 6’4” junior forward Jordan Cain, senior Brandon Taft and senior Romece Barnes will need to really become solid 2nd options of the Lions want to go deep at state or win a league title.
6. Kentwood (19-7) – The Conks won a share of the SPSL North title last season, but disappointed at districts and missed the state tournament. Josh Smith (22ppg) is an absolute monster inside and will be virtually unstoppable all season long. Tre Tyler (9ppg) is now an experienced wing and there’s another Boyce on the way.
7. Foss (15-14) – A new coach, but a lot of veteran players return for the Falcons. LuQuam Thompson and TeAire Bell are both back and both averaged over 10 per game last year. Damari Lewis, Julian Cruell, DeAndre Sutton and Allen Brown are all experienced as well. Possible Narrows League champions.
8. Mariner (18-8) – Tevin Dillon and Damascus Purnell are both back and averaged over 12 per game. The WesCo South theirs for the taking.
ON THE CUSP: Curtis (16-8), Jackson (12-11), Stanwood (13-11), Auburn (23-4 in 3A), Mountlake Terrace (7-14), Snohomish (21-5), Lincoln (25-5), Auburn Riverside (12-12 in 3A), South Kitsap (11-10), Thomas Jefferson (6-14).
